What is orthodontic or "orthognathic" surgery?

Orthognathic surgery—also known as corrective jaw surgery—is a collaborative procedure that combines orthodontics with oral surgery to correct misalignments in the jawbones that can’t be addressed with braces or Invisalign alone. This type of surgery may be recommended for adults or teens dealing with issues like chronic jaw pain, facial asymmetry, difficulty chewing, or obstructive sleep apnea. By realigning the jaws, we’re not just improving the bite—we’re enhancing function, health, and facial harmony in a lasting way.

Benefits of orthodontic surgery

Improved bite & function

By correcting underlying skeletal imbalances, orthognathic surgery can dramatically improve your ability to chew, speak, and breathe comfortably.

Facial balance & aesthetics

Surgical jaw correction enhances facial symmetry and balance—often with subtle but powerful changes that bring harmony to your profile.

Long-term health benefits

Aligning the jaws can help relieve TMJ discomfort, reduce chronic headaches, and even address sleep-related issues like snoring or sleep apnea.

The orthodontic surgery process
Consultation and digital records

Your journey starts with a consultation with Dr. Travis or Dr. Jen. They’ll perform a thorough exam, take digital X-rays and impressions, and discuss your goals.

Pre-surgical orthodontic treatment

Before surgery, we’ll use braces or Invisalign to align your teeth and prepare your bite. This phase usually lasts 6–12 months and ensures the best possible outcome from your jaw surgery.

Surgical coordination and procedure

Once you’re ready, the procedure will be performed right here in our office. We’ll handle all the scheduling, imaging, and coordination to keep the process smooth and stress-free. Most surgeries are outpatient and include general anesthesia for your comfort.

Post-surgical recovery

After surgery, we’ll continue treatment to fine-tune your bite and ensure long-term stability. Dr. Travis or Dr. Jen will personally guide your recovery with regular check-ins and customized adjustments.

Your Questions, answered

Jaw surgery is typically recommended when your bite issue stems from the bone structure—not just tooth alignment. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your bite, take 3D records, and walk you through all your options.

Yes, in certain cases. Jaw surgery may be appropriate for teens once growth has slowed or completed—typically around ages 16–18. We’ll monitor jaw development closely and only recommend surgery when the timing is right for a safe and stable outcome.

Most patients can return to everyday activities within 2–3 weeks, but full healing and orthodontic refinement can take several months. We’ll be by your side the entire way to make sure your recovery is smooth and successful.
