What is early orthodontic treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment—also known as Phase I treatment—is orthodontic care that begins before all of a child’s permanent teeth have come in, typically between the ages of 7 and 10. The goal is to guide the proper growth of the jaw, create space for incoming teeth, and address bite or alignment issues while they are still developing. At Tomblyn Family Orthodontics, we recommend an initial consultation around age 7 so we can detect and treat potential concerns early—often reducing the complexity or length of treatment in the teen years.

Benefits of early orthodontic treatment

Preventive correction

Phase I treatment can stop developing problems in their tracks—avoiding more invasive or lengthy treatment later. By addressing critical issues early, we can often nudge growth in a healthier direction.

Boosted confidence

Correcting bite problems or overly crowded teeth at a young age can help your child smile with more confidence as they grow, especially in those important formative years.

Easier future treatment

Early treatment can create space for future teeth and reduce the need for extractions, surgical procedures, or extended time in braces as a teenager.

Our early orthodontic treatments
Palatal Expanders
Palatal Expanders

Palatal expanders are devices that gently widen the upper jaw to make room for crowded teeth or correct crossbites. Our expanders are customized for comfort and success—ensuring a more natural and effective bite for developing mouths.

Partial Braces
Partial Braces

Sometimes limited braces are recommended on the upper or lower teeth to correct alignment or spacing issues early. Dr. T or Dr. Jen personally adjust appliances and explain each step, keeping treatment easy to understand and parent-approved.

Space Maintainers
Space Maintainers

If a baby tooth is lost early, a space maintainer can keep the area open to guide the adult tooth into the right position. We craft these subtle appliances in-office to prevent future crowding or misalignment.

Habit Appliances
Habit Appliances

Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or other oral habits can lead to orthodontic concerns. We offer gentle intervention through custom habit appliances that help break habits early—protecting your child’s developing bite.

Interceptive Extractions
Interceptive Extractions

In some cases, removing a baby tooth at the right time can guide proper tooth alignment and speed up orthodontic progress. Dr. T and Dr. Jen take a proactive, minimally invasive approach when interceptive extractions are recommended.

Retainers
Retainers

For younger patients finishing Phase 1 treatment, retainers help hold teeth in their new positions while we wait for all the permanent teeth to come in. Dr. T and Dr. Jen will choose the best retainer option for your child and make sure both you and your kiddo understand how to care for it.

Your Questions, answered

We and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this point, we can determine whether early treatment is necessary or if your child is on track for a healthy bite.

Signs your child may benefit from early treatment include difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking beyond age 5, speech challenges, or early/late loss of baby teeth. But don’t worry—your consultation with Dr. T or Dr. Jen includes a full evaluation to guide the best next steps.

Early treatment doesn’t always eliminate the need for Phase II braces in the teen years—but it often makes that stage shorter, simpler, and more effective. Think of it as laying the groundwork for a confident, healthy smile.
